While I was certainly around in the 1990s, I wasn't much of a fan of the music of the time. But now, its appeal is perhaps boosted by the relative unappealing nature of much of the current music of the 2020s. (Maybe in a couple of decades these contemporary songs will sound good to me...)Having picked up the Bangles' greatest hits album, I came to appreciate that band as better musicians and writers than I had previously appreciated, as well as just good to listen to. That led me to this, a solo album from one of the Bangles. This is very much an artifact of its time. A couple of songs might remind the listener of releases from Madonna at the time; another ,"Unconditional Love" by Cyndi Lauper was purportedly the original inspiration for her hit "Eternal Flame" with the Bangles. But Ms Hoffs definitely brings her own signature sound to the mix, especially her coquettish voice in the album's biggest hit "My Side of the Bed", a mix of sexuality and romance that just works. Favorites for me are the slightly haunting but melodic "Wishing on Telstar" (who, even 30 years ago, got that reference to a '60s-era communication satellite?) or the retro, driving, "This Time" , a song of regret a band like the Everly Brothers might have recorded in the '60s.While I enjoy Ms Hoff's voice more on some songs than others, I appreciate how she finds the right sound for each. And the musicianship is excellent as well, from the nice guitar work throughout (lush on "My Side" and strongly rock on other tracks) to the rat-tat-tat drums. There's good, rich sound throughout. So, if you're like me and kinda missed out on some the pop gems on the 1990s, here's your chance to add a strong collection to your mixes.
